Answer Engine Optimization, AEO, is the work of structuring a page so an AI engine can lift a clean, correct answer from it and cite you as the source. It works alongside classic SEO rather than replacing it. SEO helps a page get crawled and ranked, and AEO helps that same page get quoted. As more of your audience reads AI answers instead of clicking links, a page that is easy to quote is more likely to stay visible in those answers.
The anatomy of an answer-ready page
An engine building an answer scans for a passage it can lift with confidence. Three structural things make that easy:
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening 40 to 60 words, before any preamble. The engine can lift it, and a human skimming is served too.
- Question-shaped headings. Phrase H2s and H3s the way people actually ask, so the engine can match a heading to a query.
- A short FAQ block. Tight question-and-answer pairs are one of the easiest formats for an engine to quote. FAQPage markup no longer earns a Google rich result, because Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026, but the FAQ structure itself still helps readers and AI engines pull out a clean answer.
The rules classic SEO already taught you still apply
- Be readable without JavaScript. If the words only appear after a script runs, an engine reading the served HTML sees nothing to quote.
- Earn trust. Engines weight sources by credibility, built the same way as backlinks: other trusted sites referencing you.
- Be in more than one index. Google is not the only source. ChatGPT search uses Bing, which is something OpenAI has said, so being indexed by Bing is a signal that makes a page eligible for those answers. Check that Bing has indexed you too.
How AEO differs from SEO
The overlap is real but incomplete. SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list; AEO optimizes a passage to be lifted into an answer. You can rank first and never be cited, because your page has no passage an engine can quote cleanly. The reachability and trust work is shared; the passage-level structure is the part that is new, and the part most sites have not done.
AEO FAQ
Is AEO different from optimizing for featured snippets?
They are close cousins. Both reward an answer-first passage and clear structure, so work done for one usually helps the other. AEO widens the target from Google's snippet box to any answer engine, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
Do I need FAQPage schema for AEO to work?
No. A clear FAQ structure helps an engine quote your question-and-answer pairs, but the FAQPage schema itself no longer earns a Google rich result, because Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026. The value is in the plain FAQ format that readers and AI engines can quote, and not in the markup.
How do I measure whether AEO is working?
Track whether engines actually cite you. Auditaar scores AI Visibility from real citations across a corpus of AI answers, so you can see the structural work turn into citations. See what an AI-Visibility Score measures.
Auditaar checks answer-readiness page by page, answer-first openings, question headings, FAQ blocks and JavaScript dependence, and scores it into your AI-visibility pillar. Run an audit, or see the product.
