Search is splitting in two. Some of your audience still clicks a blue link; a growing share reads an answer an engine assembled and never visits a site at all, unless the engine cites one. If ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews are not mentioning your website, the reason is usually one of these five, and each one is something you can fix.
1. Your content answers second, not first
Engines lift passages. If your page opens with a brand preamble and gets to the answer in paragraph four, there is nothing worth quoting near the top of the page, so an AI engine may quote a competitor who gave the answer in their first sentence instead. Put your answer in the first 40 to 60 words, and check that your opening states it plainly.
2. The words only exist after JavaScript runs
If your content is rendered client-side, an engine reading the served HTML may see an empty shell. What a crawler sees before any script runs is what an engine has to work with, and increasingly what it will or will not cite.
3. You are not in Bing's index
ChatGPT search uses Bing's index, which is something OpenAI has said, so a page that Bing has not indexed is less likely to show up in those answers. Many teams work hard on Google and never check Bing. Being indexed by Bing is a signal that makes a page eligible for AI answers, and it is not a strict requirement for being cited. Checking it is quick.
4. Nothing trustworthy cites you
Engines weight sources by trust, and trust is built the same way it always was: other credible sites referencing you. A page with no external corroboration is a page an engine hesitates to quote. This is the overlap between old-fashioned link building and the new citation game.
5. You are measuring presence, not depth
Plenty of tools now tell you whether your name appeared in one answer to one prompt. That is presence, and it is noisy. Depth is a steadier thing to track, which means how often engines cite your website across many answers, which of your pages they quote, and who they cite instead of you. That is the difference between a widget that shows an AI rank and a real measurement of AI visibility.

AI Visibility FAQ
Is AI Visibility just SEO with a new name?
It overlaps but is not identical. The reachability and trust signals are shared with SEO, but the passage-level structure engines need to lift an answer is new, and citation is a different outcome from ranking. A page can rank and never be cited.
How do I know if AI engines cite me today?
Auditaar measures it directly: it reads real citations across a large corpus of AI answers and reports how often you are cited, which pages, and who is cited alongside you. See what an AI-Visibility Score measures.
Auditaar scores your AI Visibility and shows which of these five is most likely holding it back, together with a full audit of your technical setup, trust and conversion. Run it on your site.
