Three acronyms now compete for the same budget: SEO, AEO and GEO. They overlap with each other, and different companies use them in different ways. This guide treats them as three layers of one goal, which is being the source that a person ends up trusting. SEO is about being visible in search. AEO and GEO are about the work you do on the answers that AI engines generate. If you work on only one layer, the other layers can fall behind.
Three layers of the same goal: being the source the reader ends up with. Auditaar scores all three.
SEO: get found
Search Engine Optimization is the oldest layer and still the foundation: getting a page crawled, indexed and ranked in the list of links. If a search engine cannot crawl or index a page, then it has less to work with. A model can still learn about a brand from other sources, though. Titles, canonicals, internal links, Core Web Vitals and structured data all live here.
AEO: get quoted
Answer Engine Optimization is structuring a page so an engine can lift a clean answer from it and cite you. It rewards an answer-first opening, question-shaped headings and FAQ blocks. AEO is covered in depth in how to make your site answer-ready; the short version is that engines quote passages, not pages.
GEO: get recommended
Generative Engine Optimization is the newest term, and the fuzziest. It describes the work of becoming the name that a generative engine puts forward when it writes an answer or makes a recommendation. GEO is associated with the same signals that build real authority, which are citations from trusted sources, a clear identity as an entity, and a record on your topic that stays consistent and accurate.
Where to spend effort first
- Fix SEO fundamentals first. When a page cannot be crawled or indexed, or when it is not reasonably fast, an engine finds it harder to retrieve, quote or recommend.
- Add AEO structure to the pages that matter: answer first, question headings, a short FAQ. For many sites this is a layer that takes little effort, although the right priority depends on your audience, on how visible you are right now, and on the issues your site has.
- Build GEO the slow way: earn citations from trusted sources, keep your entity identity consistent, and be the most correct answer on your topic.
GEO vs AEO vs SEO FAQ
Is GEO just a rebranding of SEO?
No, though vendors sometimes use it that way. SEO optimizes for a ranked list, GEO optimizes for being named inside a generated answer. The signals overlap, especially around authority, but the outcome is different: a ranking versus a recommendation.
Do I need separate tools for each?
Not necessarily. The measurement question is the same across all three: are you found, quoted and recommended. Auditaar scores all three from one audit, so you see which layer is the weak link rather than stitching three tools together.
Which matters most in 2026?
SEO is still the foundation. AEO and GEO may be newer opportunities, because many sites have not done that work on their structure and reputation yet, while people have practiced SEO for years. The right priority depends on where your own gaps are.
Auditaar measures how easy you are to find, how ready your answers are, and how often AI engines cite you. The A-Score covers how easy you are to find on your own site and how ready your answers are, across its six areas, and a separate AI-Visibility Score tracks the real citations you get, so that you can see which layer to work on first. Run an audit, or read what an AI-Visibility Score measures.
